ATX Motherboard App

April 2024

My XR motherboard app for the Meta Quest 3 was made as part of a university project titled Reveal, which sought to do the following: "find a surface, and reveal its hidden qualities by combining two mediums".

I chose the ATX motherboard for its generic and recognised prevalent layout, and modelled a simplified version in Blender primarily using cubes.

I then took this into Unity to build my first app for the Meta Quest 3, making use of the Oculus SDK and Unity's UI components to create an interactive experience which allows a user to go through a tutorial which explains what a motherboard is/does.

It usefully highlights the relevant parts of the board, and also is hand grab-able to be picked up, and even expanded out/in when using two hands.

Many told me when they tried the app at the CMYK exhibition that the hand tracking for interaction feels "magical" and I definitely think this sort of tutorial could aid massively once XR develops further and becomes more prevalent.

If you have a Meta Quest 3 headset, the app is available for free via the Meta Store, and I definitely recommend you give it a try!

If you happen to have an Apple Vision Pro instead, you can also download a ported version of it as an Xcode project to build yourself from Github.

If not, you can view a demo of the VisionOS version here :)
