Counter Points
November 2024
Counter Points was a university project which asked the age old question: "what is good and bad design?"
Both philosophical and insightful to the overarching reasoning behind design, the brief asked to create two posters; one 'good' and another 'bad'.
The contents of the poster were an assigned quote, in my case "Civil war is inevitable", taken from a post by Elon Musk on X made in August 2024 about the state of the UK's rioting against uncontrolled mass-immigration.
For the good poster, I laid out the text in the same hierarchy as the post from which the quote originated, and utilised the typeface GT America, which was allegedly very similar to X's Chirp.
I considered this 'good' because it was clearly communicated amidst effectively used white space, and the layout/font choice had rationale behind its usage.
Therefore, for the 'bad' poster, I threw these principles out of the window, using the typeface DASH for its ornate shape and placing everything at 90º so that it would become ultra illegible.
You can technically still read it, but it becomes more of an art piece akin to graffiti rather than a clear communication of the quote with a contextual visual.
Both posters were printed in A1 size, and their goodness/badness becomes much more evident when they are placed on a wall in a normal environment.
